How much does online car registration cost? Fixed prices and fees

The fixed prices at a glance

At Zulassung24, you pay a fixed price for each procedure. The official basic fee charged by the registration authority and 19% VAT are already included. So you know what the procedure costs before you pay.

The fixed price is the same for all registration districts, regardless of whether your vehicle is registered in a large city or in a rural district.

What the fixed price includes

The official fees for registration procedures are regulated nationwide in the Gebührenordnung für Maßnahmen im Straßenverkehr (GebOSt, Germany's official schedule of fees for road traffic measures). The fixed price covers the official basic fee and our service: a plausibility check of your details, identity verification via photo ident, a qualified electronic signature and transmission to the registration authority.

In return, you save the journey, parking fees, waiting time at the authority and possibly a day of leave. If you factor in these items, a visit to the authority often comes closer to the online price than a simple comparison of fees would suggest.

Possible additional costs

Depending on the procedure, there may be additional items that you choose yourself. None of them are charged automatically.

Sample calculation for a new registration

You register a used car in your name and would like a personalised number, two new plates and an emissions sticker. The calculation then looks like this: €134.90 for the new registration, €29.90 for the plates, €14.90 for the sticker and an official fee of €12.80 for the personalised number. That makes €192.50 in total.

If you keep the existing registration number and plates for a transfer, the price remains the fixed €134.90. You reserve a personalised number in advance via Wunschkennzeichen24.

For a change of address where you keep your number, there are usually no extras at all. The price remains €84.90, and the new Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (registration certificate part I, the vehicle registration document) is sent to you by post from the authority.

Where you can save on registration

The fixed price for the procedure does not change, but you have room for manoeuvre with the extras. Before ordering, check which items you really need and select only those in the ordering process.

Especially when moving or changing keeper, existing registration numbers can often continue to be used. New plates are then only needed if you want a different number or the old ones are damaged.

• take your existing number with you when moving instead of having new plates made
• reuse intact plates for a transfer, provided the authority agrees
• only order an emissions sticker if you drive in low-emission zones and do not yet have a valid one
• only choose a personalised number if the combination is worth the extra cost to you

Running costs outside of registration

Vehicle tax and insurance premiums are not registration costs. The tax is collected by the main customs office via SEPA direct debit, and the premium is calculated by your insurer. You also pay for the HU (Hauptuntersuchung, the periodic roadworthiness inspection) directly at the testing station.
